Samsung Galaxy S to get a Value pack update, No ICS

Despite Samsung's recent announcement that it is to reconsider its decision about the Galaxy S ICS update, it appears that the former flagship won't get an official taste of the latest Android ROM.

According to the latest rumor the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S will get a Value pack update, instead of the real Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The value pack update is said to improve the user experience by bringing some of the ICS features to the Gingerbread ROM. Better web browsing, multi-tasking and new widgets were explicitly mentioned, but there's no saying if other apps will be updated as well.

CM9 launcher available in alpha

January's right around the corner and with the promise of a new year comes the anticipated release of CM9. So, to whet those ROM-flashing appetites, the CyanogenMod team's made an alpha of its Trebuchet launcher available as an .apk and .zip file over on XDA, bringing with it the ability to customize the number of homescreens, resize widgets and sort the app drawer, amongst other planned features. As is the nature of Android's underbelly, you'll need to have your device rooted, as well as running 4.0.3 in order to take part. And if you do decide to take the plunge, remember this is far from the final build, so things are bound to get buggy. Check out the source below to preview the ICS goods.

Quad Core Meizu MX

While many Android tablets are soon to be offered with quad-core configurations (including the already-available ASUS Transformer Prime), we’re still wondering if and when handsets will get over the dual-core hump. Meizu is the first to make public plans to release a quad-core device. It will be an upgraded version of their beautiful Meizu MX.

Other than its quad-core specification there’s not much know about the device at this time except a launch window – May 2012. That’s a decade from now in the world of technology but it’s a timeline we expected for the first quad-core enabled devices to, at the very least, be announced.

Chinese site Techorz speculates that it wouldn’t be foolish to expect Samsung’s quad-core Exynos 4412 inside considering their MX has the dual-core Exynos chipset, though we won’t put too much stock into that speculation.

Samsung to rethink about Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab 7.0 regarding ICS update

But now, according to Korean newspaper Ajnews, Samsung has promised to reevaluate both Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab possibility to get Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Its still not confirmed that there will be an update for both devices.

ICS lining up for LG devices

LG promised us an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich for their phones released this year and they plan to keep that promise. To assert this, they have just announced a release schedule for the Ice Cream Sandwich update.

The updates will start rolling out in two waves. The first wave will begin in Q2, 2012 and it will cover the following handsets: the LG Optimus LTE, Prada phone by LG 3.0, the LG Optimus 2X, the LG Optimus Sol, the LG my Touch Q and the LG Eclipse.

The second wave of updates will begin in Q3, 2012 and will cover the following handsets: the LG Optimus 3D, the LG Optimus Black, the LG Optimus Big, the LG Optimus Q2 and the LG Optimus EX.
This has to be by far the most comprehensive update schedule we have seen to date from any Android OEM. LG has been slow with the Android updates till now, choosing to launch their phones with an outdated version instead but like Sony Ericsson they have slowly learned the importance of timely updates and now seem to be doing an even better job compared to the likes of Samsung and HTC.
